The Kansas City Mavericks began the 2018-19 season with a big win over the Allen Americans 5-1. The win was considered big to the franchise who has battled Allen since their CHL days and the Americans always proved to be a difficult opponent.

The Mavericks hope to reach the victory column a lot this season and to reach that goal the team signed a veteran player during the off season who has won plenty of games in the ECHL. The well-known and well-traveled Joey Sides is now a Maverick after spending time earlier in the league with Tulsa, Colorado, Rapid City and the Reading Royals. While Sidesy, as he is called by his new teammates, is in his first year with the Mavericks he is in his nineth year overall in pro hockey.

Joey’s favorite pro sports team is the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. Having a sister live there is the main reason for his interest in the team. Sidesy grew up in the famous ski resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho which is also the site of his favorite hockey memory. Joey at the age of nine got to watch NHL great Wayne Gretzky skate in his back yard ice rink. Still at home in Sun Valley to root Sidesy on is his mom, two sisters and a girlfriend.

Being from Idaho it didn’t take long for Joey to put on a pair of skates. His first time on skates came at age four. If not in pro hockey today Sidesy says he would be snow boarding and snow fishing in his native state. Joey’s favorite food is Mexican as he likes burritos and nachos. His most often visited website is npr.org as he enjoys checking it every morning. Sidesy’s favorite sports movie is “Rudy.” Following his playing days Joey wishes to be remembered as a hard worker on and off the ice.

Check out Sidesy when he and his new teammates return to home ice on Saturday, Oct. 27 as the Mavericks host the Indy Fuel. The fun begins when the puck drops inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena at 7:05 p.m.
