Monday night saw a pair of opening round games be played in the Class 5, District 13 tournament hosted by Lee’s Summit North HS. Both Lee’s Summit West boys and Lee’s Summit girls teams saw their season come to an end to the hands of the Ruskin Eagles.

The boys game featured the fourth seeded LS West Titans against the fifth seed Eagles. The Titans led 10-8 near the end of the first quarter but a 7-0 run by the Eagles gave them a lead they would never relinquish in a 65-45 win. The game was close till the Eagles went on a 12-2 spurt to start the fourth quarter, a quarter the Eagles outscored the Titans 23-9. The Eagles were led by Kalaun Baker’s 25 points. The win improves the Eagles record on the season to 10-16. Up next for the Eagles is a semi-final round game against top seed Rockhurst on Tuesday night.

The Titans were led in scoring by Joshua Butler’s 13 points, Tyson Brennan was close behind with 10. The Titans finish the season at 7-17.

The next game was a girls opening round game with fourth seeded Ruskin against fifth seed Lee’s Summit. Both teams began the game as cold as it was outside the building not scoring in the first 3 minutes of play. Then both teams got hot as Ruskin led 16-7 after the first eight minutes. Lee’s Summit got within four at 27-23 when the Eagles closed the half on an 11-0 run taking a 38-23 lead into the halftime locker room. The second half saw the Eagles grow their lead to as much as 30 before settling for a 64-36 win. The Eagles improve to 7-17 and will play top seed Lee’s Summit West on Thursday night. The Tigers end their season at 1-22.
