On Mar. 23, 2019 the newly formed BCMS Mustang Guard came away from their first Winterguard competition with a rating of Excellent.
In the program’s first year, the Mustang Guard is the only Lee’s Summit middle school with a competitive team.
Winterguard utilizes the skills and talents of the color guard from the fall marching band to create a show that tells a story. Vinyl floors pulled over the basketball court are used to help create the stage and set the mood for the story being told.
The show, called “A Million Dreams,” ended with signs identifying some of the millions of career dreams of the team. The final performance this year will be on April 16 during the afternoon advisory. This will give students who might be interested in joining the team next year an opportunity to learn more about guard and see what they’re all about.
Kerri Craven, one of two coaches for the team, said of the group, “This fall 11 young ladies from BCMS walked into a gym and picked up a flag for the first time. After months of evening and weekend practices, the team competed at their first competition on March 23rd and walked away with an Excellent rating.”
