***Update***

“A bit more information about the Avenue of Flags display at the Lee’s Summit Cemetery.

The Flags flown are the casket flags given survivors of a Service member at their funerals and have usually been presented with honors.
Post 5789 has presented the Avenue of Flags display since at least 1996.

Each flag is flown with a tag commemorating the Serviceman it was presented for. These are very precious flags to us and we do our best to keep them in good repair.”

“The storm did not destroy the flags, however it did destroy the flagpoles on which they are flown. We are in the process of determining a better style pole from which to fly them.”

“We thank the community for their aid in retrieving the flags Friday in the rain and the response we had so far in our call for help to replace the poles.” Jack Ray Post 5789 Veterans of Foreign Wars

The Avenue of Flags has been a beautiful Memorial Day tribute at the Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery, (806 SE 3rd St, Lee’s Summit, MO), for many years. The casket flags from generations of Lee’s Summit veterans are proudly displayed by Jack Ray Post 5789 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Unfortunately, the storm on Friday evening, May 24 destroyed the entire display. The members of Jack Ray Post 5789 sincerely thank all the volunteers that helped retrieve the flags in the rain Friday night and collect the poles on Saturday morning.

Anyone interested in supporting the purchase of materials to rebuild the Avenue of Flags can send a donation to VFW Post 5789, 329 SE Douglas St, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063.
