LEE’S SUMMIT, MO—On Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 7:46 p.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to the Lee’s Summit Medical Center, 2100 SE Blue Parkway for a reported chemical spill. Hospital staff discovered a spilled material in the pathology lab and sealed off the area.

When the fire department arrived, it was determined the spill was contained to the pathology lab and there was no immediate threat to the remainder of the hospital. Crews identified the spilled product as 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin, used to prepare medical samples for pathology.

Fire crews wearing personal protective equipment stopped the leak from the container and cleaned up approximately one quart of spilled material. The removed material was packaged and left with the hospital for proper disposal. The incident was under control by 9:05 pm.

There were no other hazards found and no reports of any injuries.
