A Lee’s Summit man, prohibited from carrying a firearm faces an Assault 2nd Degree felony charge for pulling a firearm on a KCPD officer then struggling with him, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.

Deaundre R. Wilson, dob: 9/22/1985, faces Assault 2nd Degree, Armed Criminal Action, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Resisting a Lawful Stop.*

According to court records filed today, this Thursday evening KCPD officers in the area of 33rd and Woodland observed a vehicle; it’s license plate, when checked, indicated warrants had been issued for the owner. The officers stopped the vehicle.

The driver said his ID was in the truck. The passenger in front offered an ID that showed he was Deaundre R. Wilson. While one officer escorted the driver back to the trunk, the passenger jumped out of the car and ran. An officer pursued him on foot until the police officer caught him in the 3200 block of Highland. At that point, the defendant turned toward the officer while pulling a handgun from his waistband.

The two struggled over the gun until the officer tossed it out of the defendant’s reach. The defendant again fled. Responding officers locate the defendant in the back of a residence in the 3200 block of Wayne Avenue. The initial officer who chased him identified him as the defendant. A .45 caliber handgun was located in the adjacent yard. It was loaded with nine rounds. The defendant told a detective who interviewed him that he ran because he had active warrants.

The defendant has felony convictions that would have prohibited him from possessing a firearm.

Prosecutors requested a $15,000 bond.
