Excited to be in Kansas City would be an understatement for this new Maverick who recently moved up from the Quad City Storm of the SPHL to the ECHL. Shane Bennett is in his third week of life in the ECHL and hopes to stay the rest of the season.

Bennett spent time in training camp before the season with Ft. Wayne then landed with the Storm in the Southern Professional Hockey League. While with the Storm, Benny as his new teammates call him, got to play for former KC Maverick Dave Pszenyczny who is now coaching the Storm. Many long-time Mavericks fans will recall his was known simply as “Chezy” while playing in Kansas City. Bennett said he “feels Chezy is a great coach, he understands what we go through as he just left the game two years ago.”

Benny’s favorite pro sports team is the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres because he grew up in the area. Bennett’s home town is Grand Island, New York where he has a brother, girlfriend, a mom and grandparents all rooting him on from home. Benny’s favorite hockey memory so far was his first pro game in Fayetteville back in his SPHL playing days. Bennett first put on a pair of skates at the age of three.

Benny’s favorite website to visit daily is You Tube. If not in pro hockey today he would be doing something in sports, probably coaching. Bennett’s favorite sports movie is “The Blind Side.” Following his playing days Benny hopes to be remembered as someone who was “impactful, a good player and a good person.”

Check out Benny and the rest of the Mavericks when they play host to their rival Wichita Thunder on Friday, Feb., 7. The fun begins inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena when the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
