A positive performance is what Forward Matt Schmalz has turned in since joining the Kansas City Mavericks in a trade from the Indy Fuel. Schmalzy, as his new teammates call him, came to KC in a deal that sent a pair of Mavs to Indy in Cliff Watson and Ryan Van Stralen.

Matt is a big guy who is listed at 6’6” and 224 pounds. Schmalzy is in his fourth year playing professional hockey. Matt has been a positive change for the Mavs as he scored his first goal with the team on Friday, Jan. 31 against Tulsa. In his first five games as a Maverick he had three points on a goal and two assists.

Schmalzy’s favorite pro sports team is the Toronto Raptors of the NBA. Matt says he feels this way because, “They are under rated, proved people wrong to win a championship.” The right handed shooting forward’s hometown is Dunnville, Ontario, Canada. His mom, dad and girlfriend are rooting him on from home.

Schmalzy’s favorite hockey memory so far is when he got the Overtime Winner in the Western Conference final in juniors back in spring of 2016. Matt first put on a pair of skates at age five. His favorite website to check daily is Twitter. Schmalzy if not in pro hockey today feels he would be running a hockey school.

Matt’s favorite sports movie is “Dodgeball.” Following his playing days he wishes to be remembered as a “Big hard working skater.”

Check out Schmalzy and the rest of the Mavericks when they host their rival Wichita Thunder on Tuesday, Feb, 11. The fun begins inside the Silverstein Eye Centers arena when the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
