Megan Marshall was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Marshall enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. She recently retired after 20 years of honorable service. While serving on active duty, Megan and her husband Marcus (also a service member) have raised five children together.

“I stepped forward to run for LSR7 school board because I view the opportunity as an extension of my service to my country as a U.S. Marine. I received tremendous support from Lee’s Summit teachers during my last deployment, and this is an opportunity to pay forward the support I received. In these unprecedented times, I believe my leadership and experience are what’s needed to bring and keep our community together safely.”

Throughout her military career, Marshall has participated with several response teams as a result of pandemics and national emergencies. “When unfortunate events occur, I believe, as a leader, you must respond swiftly and strategically to ensure that the health and safety of those you serve are maintained.”

Some of Marshall’s plans upon being elected to LSR7 school board include expanding the opportunities for professional licensing and certifications for high school students. Marshall also will push to slash the overall number of hours teachers spend in professional development that doesn’t translate to higher student performance while working to implement professional development for all staff that focuses on best practices for trauma-informed care for students.

“COVID-19 has given front row seats to what students and teachers experience daily, and throughout our recovery and reentry period, we must not forget members of our community who will continue to feel the impacts of COVID-19. It is the responsibility of district leaders to ensure every student has a learning environment conducive to their style of learning. In my opinion, this is the highest form of student equity.”
