During the July 14, 2020 Regular Board of Aldermen meeting, the Board unanimously approved to amend Municipal Code Chapter 340, to allow Golf Carts, Recreational Off-Road Vehicles, and Utility Vehicles on City Streets. This ordinance will allow and control the limited use of golf carts and other utility vehicles on most City streets.

Vehicles allowed include:

• ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE – Any motorized vehicle manufactured and used exclusively for off-highway use which is fifty (50) inches or less in width, with an unladen dry weight of one thousand five hundred (1,500) or less, traveling on three (3), four (4) or more nonhighway tires.

• GOLF CART – Any motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of twenty miles per hour.

• RECREATIONAL OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE – any motorized vehicle manufactured and used exclusively for off-highway use which is more than fifty inches but no more than sixty-seven inches in width, with an unladen dry weight of two thousand pounds or less, traveling on four or more nonhighway tires and which may have access to ATV trails.

• UTILITY VEHICLE – Any motorized vehicle manufactured and used exclusively for off-highway use which is more than fifty inches but no more than sixty-seven inches in width, with an unladen dry weight of two thousand pounds or less, traveling on four or six wheels, to be used primarily for landscaping, lawn care, or maintenance purposes.

Starting January 1, 2021 all vehicles fitting the above description need to be registered with the City. The two-year license costs $30. Proof of a current driver’s license and liability insurance is required at the time of registration. Each vehicle registered will receive an individually-numbered decal.

When operated on a City street, Golf Carts, Recreational Off-Road Vehicles, and Utility Vehicles without a roof shall have a bicycle safety flag, which extends not less than seven (7) feet above the ground, attached to the rear of the vehicle.
