The Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation this week named new members to three different boards that support the organization’s initiatives.

The Women’s Intersport Network for Kansas City (WIN for KC) advisory board welcomed Mike McGurk, athletic director at Lee’s Summit North High School, as one of six new members.

McGurk is happy to be a part of the group saying, “I believe in their mission.” McGurk adds, “Having a daughter that was involved in sports I think it is important to be able to create opportunities for girls to excel and grow as leaders.” Being named to the WIN for KC board is not the first chance the McGurk and his family has had a chance to be involved in the program. McGurk says, “My daughter had a positive experience with the Girls on the Run program and my wife has done the WIN for KC women’s triathlon a couple of times.”

The advisory board does a lot of work on behalf of the WIN for KC program running several big programs throughout the year. The list includes the women’s only triathlon, Camp WIN, a summer camp for girls, hosting the Big 12 Women’s Basketball tournament and the annual WIN for KC Women’s Sports awards. This awards luncheon is the largest in the country celebrating national Girls and Women in Sports Day. In addition to these annual events McGurk feels there is even more to plan and prepare for in 2021, “The 50th anniversary of Title IX is set to occur later this year, and the addition of the women’s professional soccer team to KC, there will be plenty of work to do on serving on this board.”

The six new members to the advisory board will get right to work as their first meeting is set for next week. Board members meet every other month throughout the year.
