As the members of the Missouri General Assembly were sworn into office on January 6, the first day of the legislative session, protests taking place in the nation’s capital turned violent.

Many Missouri legislators quickly became aware of the disturbing events unfolding in Washington, D.C. just minutes after the conclusion of the ceremonies that took place in Jefferson City.

State Representative Jon Patterson issued the following statement on Thursday condemning the violence.
“There is no excuse for the actions of those who acted in a violent manner in our nation’s capital,” Rep, Patterson, R-Lee’s Summit, said. “Our nation has always guaranteed the right to gather and protest in peace, but violence and destruction like that shown across our country yesterday have no place in these United States. Acts of aggression and threats to our democracy cannot be tolerated.”
