The summer of 2020 saw a new turf field installed at Bud Hertzog Stadium in preparation for the fall sports season. Turn the calendar to 2021 and more upgrades to the area at Lee’s Summit High School are well underway.

On a recent visit one will find plenty of fencing surrounding much of the west side parking lot leading into the Fieldhouse. In addition to that, the concession stand and restroom areas are gone. The biggest change one will see is the home team stands have been removed leaving behind an empty area.

Students, alumni and area residents will soon see the improvements planned for this area including an all new bleacher section. Lee’s Summit High School Athletic Director Tracy Bertoncin said, “Things are going as scheduled right now.” Bertoncin adds, “Most of the big work will be done by late June.”

Bertoncin is excited that the project is on schedule at this time. The goal is to be ready for hosting events and holding team practices on August 1. Bertoncin says, “Our coaching staff, athletes and parents are very excited.”

While the current staff is excited the same holds true for those who at one point spent a lot of time at Hertzog stadium. Colin Aubuchon says he “Is all for the improvements at the stadium.” A 2013 LSHS graduate, Colin said “I know they had issues with the press box being on the opposite side of the field, but excited to see the area continue to be a place to play for the football team.” Colin added, “I have good memories of running out on the field and loved playing football for Coach Thomas.”

Whether you are a former player, an alumnus or currently attending Lee’s Summit High School you will want to visit Hertzog Stadium this fall to see first-hand all the improvements to the area.
