The Kansas City Mavericks swept a three-game series against Tulsa during the last week in January and all that winning was noticed throughout the ECHL.

Soon after the Mavericks learned Matt Greenfield had been named ECHL goaltender of the week. Later in the week Mavericks forward Brodie Reid was named ECHL player of the month.

Greenfield is a 25-year-old goaltender who is now enjoying his first full season in pro hockey. Previously Matt has spent in rookie camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning and two weeks playing in the American Hockey League with Springfield.

Greeny, as his new teammates call him, loves the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are Matt’s favorite pro sports team due to going to their football games while growing up. Greeny lived just 20 minutes from their home stadium and readily admits football is his second favorite sport. Still at home rooting him on is his mom, dad and a younger brother.

Matt’s favorite hockey memory so far occurred in 2016 when he won the National Juniors Championship in Canada. Greeny first put on a pair of skates at age three, thanks largely to a neighbor who played in the game in their driveway. If not in pro hockey today Matt would be owning his own business, probably just working for a small business for right now.

Greeny’s favorite foods are chicken wings and they are great to have while enjoying football. Greeny quickly admits throwing footballs on Sunday when younger. Matt’s favorite sports movie is “Miracle.” Following his playing days Greeny wishes to be remembered as a good teammate and he left it all on the ice.

Matt was given the ECHL goaltender of the week award for his work between Jan. 25-31. On Friday, Jan. 29 Matt stopped all 36 shots he faced in a 1-0 victory to record his first professional shutout. Greeny says he is, “Very thankful for it, want to make an impact and got recognition for it.” Matt learned about the honor with a phone call from Coach Tad O’Had.

Check out Greeny and the rest of the Mavericks when they begin a three-game series vs the Allen Americans on Saturday, Feb. 13. The fun begins inside Cable-Dahmer Arena when the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
