After starting the 2020-21 season playing for the Florida Everblades and seeing action in 44 games Defenseman Matt Petgrave is happy to finish the year in Kansas City with the Mavericks.

The 29 year old joined the Mavericks on May 6 and was quickly inserted into the lineup by Mavs Head Coach Tad O’ Had.

Petsy, as he is called by his new teammates, is currently in his fourth season playing in the ECHL or AHL pro hockey. Previously Matt has played for the ECHL’s Brampton Beast and AHL’s Utica Comets.

Petsy’s favorite pro sports team is any team playing in Toronto his hometown. Matt loves the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors the most. Family members still rooting him on from home back in Toronto include his parents who Petsy says “don’t miss a single minute of a single game.”

Matt’s favorite hockey memory so far is winning a championship in the OHL back in 2011. In fact, the games can still be seen today thanks to Rogers TV in Toronto having it available 10 years later for video streaming. Petsy first put on a pair of skates at age four.

If not in pro hockey today, Matt would be in the finance field. This is due to Petsy being an accounting major in college. Petgrave would also be giving the game of lacrosse a try as he played the game as much as hockey as a youth. Matt’s favorite food is pasta, loves to have it on game day and add vegetables in with it.

Petsy’s favorite sports movie is “Slapshot.” Following his playing days Matt wishes to be remembered as “someone who had a lot of fun and worked hard every day.” Regarding his time playing in Brampton with the Beast an ECHL team that has since folded operations Petsy says “had a fun time in Brampton, unfortunate they were unable to keep the team going in Brampton.”

Check out Petsy and the rest of the Mavericks when they begin a three-game home series against the Utah Grizzlies on Thursday, May 27. The fun begins inside Cable Dahmer Arena when the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
