The high school softball season is coming to a close for a number of area teams due to the start of post-season play. This week district tournaments began at a number of sites as teams compete for a district title in hopes for eventually a state championship.
Starting on Wednesday, Oct. 16 was the Class 3, District 7 tourney being hosted by Oak Grove the top seed in the eight-team event. A first round game getting a lot of attention was seeing two rivals battle to end the others season. Number four seed Summit Christian (17-4) played number five seed St. Michael’s (11-15). The Eagles beat the Guardians 12-0 to extend their season and improve to 18-4. Up next for the Eagles is a semifinal round game on Monday, Oct. 21 with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch time. The Eagles will play host Oak Grove who battled past Richmond in another first round game. The title game is set for Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m.
A Class 5 District 7 softball tourney is being played at the Lee’s Summit High School softball facility located at East Trails Middle School. Number eight seed Lee’s Summit North, number five seed and host Lee’s Summit and number two seed LS West will be getting the most attention during the five-day tourney from Oct. 17-21. Top seed Ray-Pec and three teams from the Springfield area round out the eight-team event. The Broncos enter the tourney at 8-25, The Tigers are 13-18 and the Titans own a 21-12 mark. Semifinal round games will be played on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 and at 3 p.m. The tourney title game is set for Monday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m.
