Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr. will proudly issue a proclamation that permanently designates April 19 as “George Toma Day,” in honor of legendary groundskeeper George Toma.
The community is invited to join in on the celebration
Jackson County Executive’s Declaration of George Toma Day, Friday, April 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum,1616 E. 18th Street, Kansas City, MO 64108

George Toma spent nearly all of his more than 40-year career in Kansas City, serving as head groundskeeper at Municipal Stadium, where the then Kansas City Athletics, Comets Soccer team, Royals and Chiefs played. Naturally, he assumed grounds keeping responsibilities at Truman Sports Complex when Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums opened in 1972 and 1973 respectively.
In addition to working every Super Bowl since the first one in 1967, Toma has been honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, as well as, inducted into Major League Baseball’s Groundskeepers Hall of Fame and Royals Hall of Fame.
