Jackson County Legislator Manuel Abarca IV and the Jackson County Legislature proudly join the nation in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th. This month-long celebration honors the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and immeasurable contributions of Latinos and Hispanics across the United States, particularly in Kansas City.
“Kansas City’s Latino community has been essential part of our city’s identity,” said Legislator Abarca. “From the early 20th century Mexican immigrants who helped build our city’s infrastructure, to the more recent immigrations from Central America who continue to enrich our workforce, arts, and culture, we are proud to honor the profound impact the Latino community has had on shaping Kansas City.”
Kansas City’s Latino history is deeply intertwined with the city’s development, with neighborhoods like the Westside and Northeast standing as cultural givens for generations of Latino families. From murals on Southwest Boulevard depicting the struggles and triumphs of the community, to the thriving Latino-owned businesses and non-profits serving as lifelines in Jackson County, the contributions of Latinos continue to be a cornerstone of Kansas City’s strength and diversity.
“The Latino community has played a pivotal role in the broader civil rights movements, advocating for equal housing, employment, and education opportunities. The voice of the Latino community has been essential in the halls of justice, and we honor that legacy as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month,” Abarca said.
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Jackson County Legislature will illuminate the Jackson County Courthouse in the colors of the Hispanic Heritage flag. This symbolic gesture underscores the Legislature’s commitment to honoring the heritage, culture, and undivert of the Latino and Hispanic Communities in Kansas City.
Hispanic Heritage month is not only a reflection of our history, but a celebration of the vibrant future Kansas City is currently building together.
