On Saturday, September 8th, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, the parking lot of Lake Lotawana Community United Methodist Church turns into a Recycling Extravaganza, an event for you to bring unwanted items from your home to be reused or recycled by others. Items to be collected include computers, TVs, other electronics, clothing, household goods, and much more. Bring your donations to the parking lot, located at the corner of 28901 Colbern Road and Gate 1 at Lake Lotawana. The event is open to everyone and, except for a fee on TVs and printers, is free.

LLCUMC has partnered with several organizations to make this Recycling Extravaganza happen. Surplus Exchange will collect computers, monitors, printers, TVs, cellphones, microwaves, power tools, stereo equipment, and many more items to recycle. Hillcrest Transitional Housing will be collecting clothing, purses, shoes, jewelry, linens, dishes, pans, sporting goods, books, small working appliances, and more for their thrift store in Lee’s Summit.

Books will be collected for recycling by KC Books. Both prescription eyeglasses and reading glasses will be collected to benefit the Merida Foundation for people in the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula.

White foam packing peanuts and white molded packing foam also will be collected. The foam will be reground by ACH Foam Technologies and made into new polystyrene products. Car and boat batteries also will be accepted for recycling.

Recycling in a responsible manner is expensive, and the recovered materials do not cover the costs for the harder to recycle electronics. Because of this, fees of $20 for each television and $10 for each printer will be collected. Recycling of everything else will be free.
