The City of Lee’s Summit will host a solo art exhibit featuring the work of Lee’s Summit artist Ken Downs May 28 through July 12 at City Hall, 220 SE Green St. The exhibit, “Visual Recollections,” will display a variety of Downs’ artwork depicting waterscapes, still life and figurative scenes.

Downs has quickly transitioned from a photographer into an award-winning artist, receiving numerous awards for his artwork. In his five years as a professional painter, he has received several “Best in Show” awards in art shows and festivals, including the Lexington Art Fair, Cass County Fair, Warrensburg Art Fair and Harrisonville Fine Art Competition.

“Using watercolor, acrylic and oil paints, I try to capture the beauty, balance and harmony in everyday scenes all around us,” said Downs.

His works encompass a range of subject matter. His current series highlights the detail and intricacies of musical instruments and the musicians who play them. Other series have included scenes from a quiet cafe in Paris, Italian streets and the tranquility of rural life in Asia. Through his paintings, Downs captures the unassuming detail of everyday life that we often miss or take for granted.

The public will have the opportunity to meet the artist at a reception on June 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the lobby of Lee’s Summit City Hall. The reception will take place during the Downtown Lee’s Summit Fourth Fridays Art Walk.

“Visual Recollections” is on public display at City Hall during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 28 through July 12.
