The City of Lee’s Summit’s Human Relations Commission is hosting a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. at The Pavilion at John Knox Village, 520 NW Murray Rd. The theme for this year’s free community-wide event is “Pursuit Demands Purpose” and honors the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had an immeasurable impact on our country, pursuing racial and social justice. His legacy continues to inspire subsequent generations of future leaders. This year’s keynote speaker is Bryce Ferguson, a student at Summit Christian Academy. His unique perspective reflects how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. still wields enormous influence more than 50 years after his death.

Attendees will enjoy musical performances by the Lee’s Summit High School Jazz Band, Hazel Grove Elementary, Lee’s Summit West Chamber Choir and the MLK Community Mass Choir. The first 300 people to arrive will receive a free T-shirt commemorating the event.

“There is a way for each of us to contribute, express ourselves and serve. We all have a mix of experiences, passions, values, desires and skills,” said Pastor Dale Beasley, chair of the Human Relations Commission. “Every journey has purpose. With a heart of passion, we can all have a positive impact on the community.”

Prior to the program, there will be a preshow at 5:30 p.m. where attendees will have the opportunity to visit various booths representing Panama, Kenya, Israel, Colombia, Gambia, Hawaii and India.
