Lee’s Summit Medical Center — part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s leading healthcare provider — introduced a $6 million, 6,500-square-foot intensive care unit (ICU) expansion in late May.

The renovation features eight additional beds, bringing the total count to 18; a second medication room to ensure quick access to medications for all ICU patients; a second point-of-use room to keep resources in close proximity to all ICU rooms; and a separate shower room for patients requiring a larger space than the bathroom/shower in their private room.

“As the communities we serve continue to grow, it’s important for our hospital to meet the increasing demand for high-quality healthcare,” said Lee’s Summit Medical Center CEO John McDonald. “This additional ICU space represents our commitment to and investment in the community, allowing our hospital team to care for even more of our community’s critically ill and fragile patients and keep them close to home.”

“This ICU expansion demonstrates the commitment and dedication Lee’s Summit Medical Center has to the community’s healthcare needs,” says Lee’s Summit Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Paige Baker, RN, MSN. “Our extraordinary team of nurses who care for acutely ill patients and their family exemplify excellence in high-quality, compassionate patient care.”

In addition to increased capacity and a streamlined layout, the expansion features a second entrance from the hospital emergency room directly into the ICU, creating quick access for transferring patients from the ER to the ICU, as well as more privacy and the ability to care for more high acuity patients.
