Lee’s Summit R7 teachers Jen Abernathey and Carlye Howk were recent recipients of a Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant from Daughters of the American Revolution. The $500 grant will help to purchase Science of Reading Tool Kits to enhance reading skills in their kindergarten classrooms at Prairie View Elementary.

According to Mrs. Abernathey, “these tool kits provide multisensory materials utilizing color coding to help students practice and master decoding skills. These kits will be used in small groups and independent work time and will help support the research with Science of Reading instruction which is being implemented in our district. We’re hopeful these materials will help our struggling readers to find success as well.”

The grant was sponsored by the DAR Prairie Chapter.
