Mayor Bill Baird issued the following proclamation:
WHEREAS, the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety are challenging drivers to buckle up and put their phones down; and,
WHEREAS, the challenge is simple: when you get into any vehicle, buckle your seat belt and, if you are the driver, put your cellphone down; and,
WHEREAS, 65% of all fatalities in 2021 Missouri traffic crashes were unbuckled; and,
WHEREAS, traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for people between the age of 15 and 20, with distracted driving being one of the primary causes; and,
WHEREAS, by buckling up and putting you phone down, you will do your part to help make Missouri’s roads safer and save lives; and,
WHEREAS, as the Mayor of Lee’s Summit, I encourage Lee’s Summit residents to join the more than 20,000 people and 700 businesses that have pledged to make the roads safer for themselves and others by taking the Buckle Up Phone Down Challenge.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, William A. Baird, by virtue of the authority invested in me as Mayor of the City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, do hereby proclaim October 21, 2022 as
BUCKLE UP PHONE DOWN DAY
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, this 18th day of October, 2022.
