September 21, 2024

Jazz in the Valley, a free music festival on the Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley campus, will be held 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. The public is invited.

Penn Valley’s fourth annual jazz event will feature:

Stranded in the City – A five-man band led by brothers Andre Reyes Jr. and Antonio Reyes, Stranded in the City brings a retro flavor wrapped in a fresh sound and laced with soul and rich vocal harmonies. They are well-known in Kansas City and play a variety of genres, including R&B, funk, country, Tex-Mex, rock and pop.

The Mighty Mo Jazz Orchestra – Established in 2011, the Mighty Mo Jazz Orchestra helps connect audiences with the LGBTQ and allied community through the sounds and emotions of jazz. Performances can include music such as swing, pop, Latin, Broadway and other favorites.

“Kansas City’s vibrant jazz history sets the perfect backdrop for our joyful gathering. We’re excited to welcome the community to our beautiful campus as we come together to celebrate the incredible talent of our local artists,” says Tammy Robinson, president of MCC-Penn Valley.

Jazz in the Valley will be enjoyed outdoors near the Carter Art Center on the south side of the Penn Valley campus, 3201 Southwest Trafficway, Kansas City. Free parking will be available in the MCC garage on Pennsylvania Avenue between 32nd and 33rd streets. In the event of rain, the festival will move inside the Campus Center.

A variety of food trucks will be on campus, as well as a community resource fair.

Attendees can bring lawn chairs, blankets, water bottles or coolers. Alcohol, pets, firearms, tobacco and drugs are not allowed on campus.
