While the Kansas City Mavericks have enjoyed watching rookies like Bryan Lemos play well this season having a steady veteran helps too and that’s where Defenseman Kevin McKernan comes in. Kevin spent two and a half years in the ECHL prior to coming to the Mavericks for the 2019-20 season. Mac, as he is called by his new teammates, played for Fort Wayne and South Carolina.
Kevin is an east coast native who hails from Milbury, Massachusetts. Mac’s family are big football fans so it’s no surprise that his favorite pro sports team is the NFL’s New England Patriots. Kevin has several family and friends living in central Massachusetts rooting him on in the ECHL.
Mac’s favorite hockey memory so far was playing in the 2016 NCAA Frozen Four where his team lost the championship game. The event that year was played in Tampa, Florida home of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning.
Kevin first put on a pair of skates at age two and a half. Mac’s favorite website to visit daily is barstoolsports.com. If not in pro hockey today right-handed defenseman would be doing something related to marketing. McKernan was a marketing major in college.
Mac’s favorite sports movie is “Semi-Pro.” Following his playing days Kevin wishes to be remembered as a hard working kind of guy. The ECHL All Star game is coming up this week to be played in Wichita, KS. Mac says being an All Star would be a “cool thing to have no matter what level you are at.” Justin Woods is the lone Mavericks representative and the game will be played Wednesday evening Jan. 22. Game time is at 7 p.m. and can be seen nationally on the NHL Network.
Join McKernan and the rest of his teammates when the KC Mavericks return home to host the Idaho Steelheads on Friday, Jan. 24. The Mavs and Steelheads will meet again on Saturday, Jan, 25 on what is Military Appreciation weekend. The fun begins both nights when the puck drops inside the Silverstein Eye Centers arena at 7:05 p.m
