The Kansas City Mavericks welcomed several new players to the team for the 2019-20 season but there was a new addition to the coaching staff as well. Coming all the way from the AHL’s Stockton Heat is new assistant coach Kohl Schultz.
While Schultz is excited to begin his first season working in the ECHL, he is very excited to be back home. Schulty, as his new team calls him, is a Shawnee Mission East High School graduate who says, “It’s awesome coming home.” Kohl feels “it’s great to be back and get to hang out with my cousin.” Schultz, now in his third season working in professional hockey, feels more than anything “It feels good getting to do what you love” in your hometown.
The one time Lancer at one time pursued a law career and wanted to major in International Law. Instead Schultz returns home after working as a video coordinator for the Stockton Heat who is affiliated with the Mavericks as part of the Calgary Flames organization. Schultz says working for the Heat under Coach Cail McClain was “highly beneficial.” Now spending time with the Mavericks players who wish to one day be called up to Stockton, Kohl says, “It’s a big time thing, I know what Calgary is looking for.”
Following his playing days Schultz hopes to be remembered as “a genuine person, was candid with players.” Kohl’s favorite sports movie is “Remember the Titans.” Being from the Kansas City area Schultz is happy to share his hometown’s best spots to all the new Mavericks. Kohl says of Kansas City “so much a big city to offer.” For example Schultz has shared experiences with players at the Power & Light district, KC Royals and KC Chiefs games.
Your next chance to see this Kansas City native work in his hometown is on Tuesday, Dec. 10 when the Mavericks play host to the Indy Fuel. The fun inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena begins when the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
