A measure to give communities a voice in landfill developments on their border passed the Missouri House of Representatives in a 112 to 30 vote Thursday. House Bill 1751 is sponsored by Rep. Mike Haffner (R – Pleasant Hill).

“We thank our lawmakers for listening to the people and the unanimous, bipartisan support we have seen for this legislation in our region,” Mayor Kris Turnbow said.

HB 1751 now moves on to the Missouri Senate, where Sen. Mike Cierpiot’s (R – Jackson Co.) identical bill, Senate Bill 739, also awaits a vote.

HB 1751 and SB 739 have broad support among the region’s legislators, and more than two dozen cities, counties, school districts and other organizations have voiced public opposition to the landfill location proposed by landfill developer Jennifer Monheiser along Kansas City’s southern border with Cass County.
