Lee’s Summit CARES is working with local partners to participate in National Drug Take-Back Day, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. Residents are invited to dispose of unwanted and expired human and pet medications – both prescription and over-the-counter – at one of three locations in Lee’s Summit. The event is anonymous and free.

Medications will be accepted in the original bottles, so there is no need to remove labels. Vape pens will be accepted after the battery has been removed. Needles and inhalers will not be accepted.

Drive-through drop-off locations will be at the Lee’s Summit Police Department, 10 NE Tudor Road, and Lee’s Summit Medical Center Emergency Room entrance, 2100 SE Blue Parkway. Places Restaurant at John Knox Village, 1001 NW Chipman Road, is a walk-in site.

The local event is sponsored by Lee’s Summit CARES, Lee’s Summit Police Department, Lee’s Summit Water Utilities and First Call Kansas City. If residents aren’t able to participate on Oct. 23, they can visit lscares.org/drug-takeback.html for other disposal options.

Nearly 10 million people misuse prescription pain relievers according to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The survey reported that a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. The event addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue to prevent drug diversion to unintended users and prevent overdose deaths.

Lee’s Summit CARES mobilizes community partners to develop a culture of physical and mental wellness for Lee’s Summit youth and families that inspires positive, healthy choices. For more information, visit www.LSCares.org, or follow Lee’s Summit CARES on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
