The Civil War spirits in Lone Jack have wonderful, frightful, painful, yes, and hopeful stories to tell. For 16 years the Lone Jack Historical Society has been lending a hand to the spirits who want to share their stories. If you dare, visit these spirits on Saturday, Oct. 26. Listen to their stories from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Battlefield Museum.
Follow your guide’s lantern as you search this hallowed ground for those soldiers and civilians embroiled in the conflict. Listen as they recount their stories; the horrors they lived through. See the battle and war through the eyes of those who lived it. Listen as they tell of living through those heart-rending times and their hope for the future.
When Ft. Sumter fell in April 1861 Americans east of the Mississippi River said the war would be over in months. It would never cross the great river. Little did they care that the citizens in the border area of Missouri and Kansas had been fighting a war since 1854 after the introduction of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
In August 1863 it was known as Ewing’s Order #11. Those who lived through it called it a license to burn, steal and murder. Listen as our spirits share their stories. Feel their pain and sorrow.
No tricks, just treats await. Hear their stories for the price of admission. Museum admission for adults is $7; children 6-12 years, $3; children under 6 years free. On this spirited night, the price includes the spirit walk and museum admission. Dress for the weather.
The all-volunteer Lone Jack Historical Society manages the museum’s daily operations. Help keep the doors open. Docents are needed. Donations are always greatly appreciated. For more information call the museum at 816-697-8833, visit the website, www.historiclonejack.org or Facebook page.
