Summer is here! Your kids are home and, while they may be jumping for joy with the extra time off, you may be looking for ways to keep them off their screens and help them learn something new. Your Hy-Vee dietitians have you covered with our virtual cooking camp – Out of the Box Into the Kitchen. Learn how to cook with sneaky ingredients to boost the flavor and nutrition of your dishes. Plus, enjoy fun, food-focused activities that feature “out of the box” ways to use foods!

Whether you’re battling picky eating habits or simply trying to improve your child’s sous chef skills in the kitchen, this camp is for you! Participate from the comfort of your home kitchen with camp classes led by Hy-Vee dietitians who will provide your children with nutrition education and fun memories to tell their friends about when they head back to school. The virtual cooking camp will be offered three different weeks in July.

Not only will your children have fun at camp, but getting children involved in the kitchen has numerous benefits including:

• Building healthy habits: Exposing children to new foods, allowing them to play with and incorporate those foods into simple recipes can open their minds to healthier foods and lay the foundation for healthier habits that last a lifetime.
• Improve their fine motor, reading and math skills: No matter the child’s age – whether they are spreading ingredients with a knife, cracking an egg or reading a recipe and measuring out ingredients – children can continue their education over the summer in the kitchen!

Camp is recommended for children ages 5 – 12 and each class will feature one recipe and one activity. Your kids will dive in by making Super Hero Muffins and round out the four-day camp by trying Sneaky Spinach Smoothie Pops, plus they will participate in fun activities such as building their own bath bombs and edible art!
