Missouri lawmakers officially concluded the 2024 legislative session with their annual veto session. Barring any unforeseen events, legislators will return in January to begin the 2025 legislative session.

State Rep. Jon Patterson (R-Lee’s Summit) looked back this week after completing a term as the House of Representative’s majority leader, the 2nd highest leadership position in the House.

“It was a tremendous honor to serve in this role, representing Lee’s Summit,” said Patterson. “Despite a lot of challenges, we were able to get a lot of things done that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our constituents.”

Patterson cited a healthcare bill that expanded Medicaid coverage for post-partum care and legislation that froze property taxes for senior citizens as accomplishments.

“With the mess we have in Jackson County with property taxes, I’m glad we were able to make sure senior citizens at least have some certainty in their property taxes going forward,” said Patterson.

Starting in 2025, Patterson will serve in the House in the role of speaker. He has been elected by his colleagues to serve in the position if he is re-elected to the House. Patterson would be the first Jackson County representative to serve as speaker of the Missouri House since 1857.

“I think it’ll be great for Lee’s Summit and Jackson County, to have someone that position if that happens,” said Patterson. “Right now, I’m just focused on talking with constituents and earning their votes in November.”
