The Summit Christian Academy Eagles got off to a slow start in tonight’s District Championship game against Lafayette County. The Eagles were down 14-0 before they got their first score of the game, but then rattled off 35 straight points to win 35-14. The victory improves the Eagles record to 11-1 and earns them the Class 2, District 7 Championship.
Lafayette County Huskers came to Lee’s Summit winners of seven straight and they opened the game with a 84 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Mason Rumsey. The Huskers doubled their lead to 14-0 later in the first with 4:59 left when Austin Gard scored on a 5 yard TD run. The game’s first turnover went in the favor of the Eagles who scored on the play. While trying to avoid a safety the Huskers QB leaped out of the end zone and threw the ball into the hands of the Eagles Christian Newsome who then scored from 3 yards out. The quarter ended with the Huskers leading 14-7 but the Eagles were just getting started.
The Eagles got another turnover thanks to a fumble recovery at the Huskers 34 yard line with 4:27 left in the second quarter. The Eagles would get points off the turnover when Eagles QB Grayson Sprouse found newsome on a 13 yard Touchdown pass to even the game at 14. With just 14.3 seconds left in the half the Eagles tried a 26 yard Field goal that failed so the game was tied at the half at 14. The Eagles enjoyed a large advantage 235-77 in first half yards.
Junior RB Lucas Eckles got the scoring machine started for the Eagles in the second half with a 16 yard run with 10:12 left in the third quarter. The Eagles first lead in the game at 21-14 would grow later in the quarter when Eckles scored from 26 yards out with 2:46 left giving them a 28-14 lead. The Fourth quarter saw much the same as Eagles QB Grayson Sprouse found Isiah Cahimbia for a 31 yard touchdown pass with 10:59 left in the game. The Eagles 35-14 lead would stand up thanks to two second half interceptions, one by Cahimbia and another by Eckles.
The high flying Eagles advance to a Class 2 quarterfinal round game next Saturday, November 23 against Lathrop who won tonight 29-28 over Maryville.
