The Rotary Club of Lee’s Summit has announced plans for the 7th Annual Heart of the Summit 5K/10k/10k-Relay. The event will take place Saturday morning, September 8, 2018, at Unity Village.
“As it has in past years, this event will honor and benefit Lee’s Summit’s first responders – the Lee’s Summit Police and Fire Departments – those who put themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis to protect our community, lives and property,” commented event co-chair Jeff Silver. The precise projects that will be supported by this year’s event are still under consideration by police and fire officials, according to Silver.
“The fact that his event is scheduled for September 8 is no coincidence,” says event co-chair and club president Brad McCleary. “We wanted to schedule as close as possible to the anniversary of 9-11. And recent events in our country have only underscored the need to demonstrate to our police and fire departments that the community is behind them.”
Heart of the Summit festivities will start approximately 7:30 a.m. on September 8th, with a Lee’s Summit Fire Department color guard, along with a performance of the National Anthem and a drum line. A variety of activities – such as face painting, a bounce house and school and team mascots will add to the fun. Chris Cakes will be on hand to provide breakfast for a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. The public is encouraged to attend.
The actual race will begin at 8 a.m., on a course that routes through Unity Village. With a 5k, 10k, 10k- relay and a kids’ race, the event is designed to be fun, but also competitive for serious runners. Computerized chip timing will be utilized to deliver precise times.
“We are very pleased to have such great support,” adds McCleary. “With sponsorship support from our business community, the citizens of Lee’s Summit, and active participation from the running community, we’re anticipating not only an excellent event, but a very positive showing of support for our community’s first responders.”
