Two Kansas City men have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting of Gregory B. Marchand on Friday in Blue Springs, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Zaylen Z. Smith, dob: 0/31/2999, faces Murder 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action charges.* In addition, Donovan M. Jordan, dob: 5/27/1999, faces Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Resisting a Lawful Stop.*
According to court records filed today, Defendant Smith, the victim and co-defendant Jordan were meeting for a marijuana deal.
After the victim was shot, the two defendants were found in Kansas City later, following a pursuit by police. A firearm was located in the vehicle after the car crashed..
The codefendant stated that Defendant Smith opened the victim’s passenger side door and shot him and stole the money he had just given him for the drugs.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest in broad daylight.
Surveillance from an adjacent store shows the defendant approach the scene with a firearm in his left hand and walk around a van which blocks the view of the actual shooting. The defendants clothing that appears in the surveillance video was found in the apartment where he stays.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 for Smith and $50,000 for Jordan.
*Charges are only accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the defendant is either found guilty or has pleaded.
