Dear Editor,

We don’t live in Lee’s Summit but my wife and I visit often and support the local businesses. Last fall we had an issue in town and unfortunately we had to call the Lee’s Summit Police. To my surprise the police did nothing and did not even take a report. When we returned home I contacted the Lee’s Summit Police Dept. online, and filled out a complaint. I was contacted by a dept. investigator who started the investigation with statements, and the presumption, that the officers had done everything correctly and that it was my perception that was to blame. I’m assuming the dept. phone is recorded and the questions were directed to clear the dept. of all wrong doing.

There is no transparency, accountability or impartiality in the department policing itself, so the public can have no confidence in there decisions. The Lee’s Summit City Council needs to establish a citizens oversight board to represent the public in complaints against the police dept.

Respectfully,
Dr. Tim Altenburg DDS
