New State of Missouri requirements are resulting in additional immunizations for 2016-17 eighth-grade students and seniors. The following additional immunizations will be required by the state beginning with the 2016-17 school year:

• All 2016-17 eighth-grade students are required to have one dose of Meningococcal vaccine.

• All high-school seniors are required to have two doses of Meningococcal vaccine, unless the first dose was administered when the student was 16 years of age or older.

The Lee’s Summit R-7 School District’s Health Services Department is working with county health officials to coordinate immunization clinics at R-7 middle and high schools. It is important to remember that students will not be allowed to enroll for the 2016-17 school year without providing proof of all required immunizations, including the new meningococcal vaccine.

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection and is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in children from age 2 through 18 in the United States. For more information, families may contact their school’s health room or their county health department.
