On April 7 the Lone Jack Historical Society joins over 150 other Civil War historical sites across the nation in offering families, scouts, students, historians–anyone interested in history and community service an opportunity to help honor our veterans by cleaning up the Civil War battlefield, cemetery and museum, and Cave Hotel for our 2018 visitors.

This event brings history buffs, preservationists and volunteers of all ages together to serve their communities at historic sites nationwide.

In Lone Jack, the Lone Jack Historical Society will host a Park Day event at the Civil War Battlefield Park, Museum and Cemetery. To launch the spring tourist season, outside needs include raking leaves and flowerbeds, clearing limbs and brush. Inside needs include sweeping and mopping floors, washing windows and cleaning glass displays in the museum and Cave Hotel.

In 1862 Union soldiers and Confederate recruits battled one another in the center of town. After the battle, those who gave their last full measure were laid to rest beneath Lone Jack’s hallowed battlefield ground. On April 7 volunteers will honor these brave men, on both sides, as well as all American veterans before and after, by sprucing up this veterans’ memorial. Help us defeat winter’s winds and storms to clean up debris and restore the battlefield, soldiers’ cemetery, museum and Cave Hotel. Although a small site, we host visitors from across the country and even international visitors.

The Lone Jack Historical Society manages the daily maintenance and upkeep for this Jackson County Park’s museum and cemetery. It is a rewarding, but time-consuming job. If you are retired, empty nesters, a family with budding historians or anyone interested in our country’s history, consider volunteering.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 7 (rain date April 14), at the Lone Jack Civil War Battlefield Museum, ½ mile south of Hwy. 50. Clean up begins at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers receive a t-shirt. Lunch will be provided with advance sign up. Clean up should end about 2:00 p.m.

To volunteer and reserve lunch, please call Alinda at 816.805.1815. Please remember to bring gloves and dress for the weather. Remember to label all tools you bring.
