The City of Lee’s Summit has received Gold level recognition as a “Community for All Ages,” which acknowledges the work the City has done to become more welcoming to residents of all ages.

The City of Lee’s Summit conducted a review of its age friendliness, which resulted in Silver level recognition. To achieve Gold level recognition, the City then implemented a plan to become a great place for residents of all ages to live and age well. A citizen-based committee was appointed to assess City activities and investments, age-friendly policies were incorporated into City plans, and City representatives worked with program managers from the Mid-America Regional Council’s KC Communities for All Ages to identify issues.

“The City of Lee’s Summit is honored to be recognized as a Community for All Ages at the Silver and Gold levels,” said Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird. “We’re committed to planning for the future and creating a roadmap to address the needs of the City’s changing demographics.”

The Communities for All Ages recognition program has six criteria: public outdoor spaces and buildings; housing and commercial development; transportation and mobility; social inclusion, communication and participation; civic participation and employment; and community and health services.

The Communities for All Ages recognition program was developed by the First Suburbs Coalition and KC Communities for All Ages. The first awards were presented in May 2015.

Communities can maintain their recognition status by continuing to implement new elements of their plans to be welcoming to residents of all ages.
