It’s that time of year again for kids to show off their angling skills at Jackson County Parks + Rec’s 38th Annual Kids Fishing Derby. This family-friendly event is FREE to kids between the ages of 2 to 15 and they must be accompanied by an adult.

The derby will take place on Saturday, May 4 at Lake Jacomo in Fleming Park located at 9201 Beach Road in Lee’s Summit (Beach Road ½ mile north of Colbern Road).

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The fishing and derby contest will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with an awards ceremony at 11:00 a.m.

Every child who registers for the Kids Fishing Derby will receive a free fishing rod and reel combo courtesy of Pure Fishing. They should also bring their own bait and a bucket to hold their catch.

This annual event includes a casting clinic and contest conducted by the Optimist Club of Lake Lotawana. The Missouri Trout Fisherman’s Association will weigh all of the fish caught and the top 10 contestants will receive trophies and prizes that have been donated by local merchants.

In addition to Pure Fishing, the Optimist Club of Lake Lotawana and the Missouri Trout Fisherman’s Association, we are also proud to have The Examiner as a sponsor of this event.
