The Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council released a resolution this week in opposition to a possible landfill in southern Kansas City:

WHEREAS, the mission of the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council is to promote and enhance the City of Lee’s Summit as a model community for economic innovation and growth fueled by a pro-business environment, diverse economic base and a commitment to strong relationships and work ethic, elevate quality of life; and,

WHEREAS, the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council is aware numerous resident and stakeholders have expressed concern to the Mayor and Council of the City of Lee’s Summit about the potential location of a landfill outside the corporate City limits but near the City’s border; and,

WHEREAS, it appears that there is currently no application pending with the City of Kansas City, Missouri or the Missouri Department of Natural Resources related to such a landfill; however, the discussion in the community continues; and,

WHEREAS, the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council is aware that a landfill will be needed to serve the metropolitan area at some point in the future, however, any attempt to do so should be undertaken only after full engagement by the entire metropolitan community including impacted Counties, Cities, residents and stakeholders; and,

WHEREAS, no such engagement of the entire community or metropolitan areas has been conducted.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEE’S SUMMIT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL, LEE’S SUMMIT, MISSOURI, as follows:

SECTION 1. That the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council hereby expresses its opposition to the location of any landfill outside the corporate City limits and near the borders of the City.

SECTION 2. That any and all resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are repealed to the extent of such conflict only.

SECTION 3. That this resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after the date of its passage and adoption, and approval by the Board of Directors.
