Lakewood’s second annual DAM Breast Cancer Walk returns on Tuesday, Oct. 8 to the East Lake Marina Shelter House. The community event, hosted by the Lakewood Ladies 50+ Club, promotes breast cancer awareness and raises money for Bra Couture KC, a 501(c)(3) founded by Lee’s Summit resident and breast cancer survivor, Sharon Payne.

Last year’s party drew such an overwhelming response that the Club decided to make it an annual event. Jacob Lanier, Fox 4 WDAF-TV Meteorologist, will emcee this year’s celebration, and Suzanne Skinner, Lee’s Summit breast cancer survivor and Bra Couture KC runway model, will serve as grand marshal for the fun walk and decorated golf cart parade. Mac, the KC Mavericks’ mascot, will be there to cheer on the walkers and take photos with fans.

“Grab your friends and put together a team; express your style with a custom team look. Carry a handmade sign to honor a survivor or a friend or relative who’s battling the disease today. Man’s best friend is welcome as well,” said Janet Beebe, a Lee’s Summit resident whose pooches sported pink tutus at last year’s walk.

The Club will also sell raffle tickets at the celebration for some exciting prizes, including a Royals basket with 2025 game tickets, a wine basket, an athleisure apparel basket, restaurant gift cards, and more. Proceeds will benefit Bra Couture KC in their mission to fund cancer services for uninsured and underinsured persons (men and women) in local Kansas City hospitals for all types of cancer (https://bracouturekc.com).

Walkers will be able to take a break from the fun to get their annual mammogram performed at Kansas City’s first mobile 3D mammography coach. Diagnostic Imaging’s Mobile Mammography Coach will be on-site from 4:00 to 6:00 pm to provide this service. Appointments are required, and interested persons should verify their insurance coverage and co-pay before scheduling an appointment at 913.344.9989. (Mention the event, date, and location when you make the appointment.) Payment will be due at time of service.

Event organizer Stephanie Atchity said, “The Lakewood Ladies 50+ Club is dedicated to providing fun events for our members and the community. This is a signature event for us because it reflects our values: family, friends, neighbors, unity, and connections. Please join us for our free family walk as we help raise funds for Bra Couture KC’s mission for the metropolitan area.”
