By Assistant Chief Jim Eden

On Friday, September 07, 2018 at 1:00 a.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm for the Missouri Department of
Transportation (MoDOT) Maintenance Facility at 2050 NE Independence Avenue.

When the fire department arrived, smoke was coming from the garage of a large two-story maintenance facility. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire for additional resources.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The first arriving unit entered the building to find a fire involving a dump truck. One automatic fire sprinkler head above the truck had activated and kept the fire in check until fire crews could make final extinguishment. After confirming the fire was out, the sprinkler system was shut down and the smoke was removed from the building.

The fire was under control by 1:34 a.m. Fire damage was isolated to the dump truck with minor smoke damage to the inside of the service area.

The cause of the truck fire is undetermined.

It would be really interesting to know what cause the fire especially that it says that there is no one on the facility when the fire started.
