This evening (Thursday, October 25, 2018) I attended the NAACP Candidate Forum at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center with my husband David J. Bernal, who is running for Jackson County Sheriff.

My husband has devoted 37 years of his life to public service through his jobs as a KCMO police officer and Special Agent with the FBI. I also have a son who is a police officer and a brother who is a retired law enforcement officer.

I was appalled and disgusted and am actually livid by some of the remarks made at the forum tonight by the interim Sheriff, Daryl Forte. He had the nerve to disrespect personnel of the Jackson County Sheriff’s department tonight by referring to them as “drunks, racists, good ole boys and uneducated.”

What kind of a leader refers to men and women who put their lives on the line every day in this degrading way, especially in a public forum? How unprofessional! Mr. Forte I’m extremely disappointed in you and I sincerely believe that Jackson County can do so much better!! The citizens of the county deserve better and so do the personnel of the Sheriff’s department.

Sour 🍇. This woman has an agenda. Concerned citizen my foot. The Jackson County sheriffs department is a cesspool of corruption and needs to be scoured. I believe the interim sheriff will do the deed well.

Stereotyping persons is indicative and characteristic of behavior associated with bigots and despots. Unfortunately, interim Sheriff Daryl Lee Forte stooped to these unfair and inaccurate remarks in his remarks to attendees at last night’s NAACP Candidate Forum. Our local law enforcement officers put their life on the line everyday as they serve to protect the public. Their profession should be respected. This includes Jackson County Deputy Sheriffs, who are underpaid and risk their lives for less compensation than substitute teachers. Daryl Lee Forte should issue a public apology immediately for his crude remarks about the men and women of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department .
