JEFFERSON CITY– A major winter storm is making its way into Missouri, bringing heavy snowfall and some freezing rain across parts of the state on Nov. 14. The Missouri Department of Transportation advises drivers to use caution and only travel if necessary.
The storm system will start Wednesday and will continue until Thursday afternoon and will impact travel in the northeast, central and southeast parts of the state – especially in the St. Louis area where the forecast calls for 4 to 8 inches of snow.
“For your safety and the safety of our crews, we’re asking that once this storm hits your region of the state, that you only travel if necessary,” said MoDOT State Maintenance Engineer Becky Allmeroth. “Snow is predicted to be heavy and that makes travel extremely hazardous.”
If you must go out, here are some tips to share the road with snowplows:
- Give snowplows room to work; don’t tailgate or try to pass.
- Remember that a snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they may not see you.
- Stay at least six car lengths back from snowplows and equipment. Plowed snow can create a cloud that can blind drivers following too close.
- Don’t drive distracted. Buckle Up Phone Down.
Stay informed about Missouri road conditions by using MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map, available online at www.modot.org, or through MoDOT’s smartphone app, available for iPhone and Android phones. The map offers current views of road conditions for Missouri interstates and highways. You can zoom in to a particular location, check live weather radar, and view images from MoDOT’s traffic cameras and message boards.
