Jackson County officials and the Jackson County Health Department have issued the following statement regarding Bass Pro Shops:

“On March 24, Jackson County officials instituted a Stay-at-Home Order for the entirety of eastern Jackson County. On March 27, the Jackson County Health Department received community complaints that Bass Pro Shops remained open, despite the Stay-at-Home Order being in place. On March 30, the Jackson County Health Department, in consultation with County officials, notified Bass Pro Shops that it was not considered an essential business.

“Pursuant to the policies established by the County Administrator and Health Director, businesses that are deemed non-essential may appeal that determination. Bass Pro Shops appealed the Health Department’s decision and in doing so, cited a Missouri State Statute that prohibits the state, county or any municipality from restricting gun sales during an “emergency.” Based upon this information, legal counsel advised county staff that Bass Pro Shops should be allowed to stay open for the sale of firearms and ammunition.

“Under the County’s order, Bass Pro Shops is considered a non-essential business. However, the sale of firearms, ammunition and other goods directly related to responsible firearm storage and maintenance can continue as they are protected under Missouri law. All other in-person sales must cease. The County will allow two business days for Bass Pro Shops to rectify this issue.

“Although certain businesses can remain open at this time, Jackson County officials strongly urge all residents to stay at home as much as possible. Individuals should only leave the home when providing or receiving essential services in the community.”
