In Phase 2 of Recovery youth sports leagues and practices are allowed with limitations. Regular league play is allowed, but large tournaments are prohibited. Any competition and travel team should avoid traveling outside of the Kansas City metro.

Visit jacohd.org to read the department’s Recovery Plan to learn detailed information on the status, social distancing, hygiene, cleaning, personal protective equipment, symptom screening, requirements, and resources for youth recreation and sports.

Physical activity is important for all people’s health and wellbeing. Youth sports provide an outlet for children to be physically active. The Sports Medicine Team at Children’s Mercy Hospital has prepared resources for parents and guardians as youth begin to return to leagues and camps.

They point out that with many youth being less active in the spring there is a need to safely reintroduce exercise. Their website, childrensmercy.org, provides steps on how to gradually return and acclimate to exercise to reduce the risk of acute and overuse injuries.

The Sports Medicine Team has also provided a guide for returning to sports that includes guidance for different sports, age groups, and vulnerable populations. Additionally they provide information on the infection risks of tournaments, camps, travel teams, and low, moderate and high risk sports.

Children’s Mercy is providing information to the greater Kansas City region. All guidance, rules and regulations regarding the return of sports in Eastern Jackson County must be followed as stated in the Phase 2 Recovery Plan.
