August 28, 2020

I apologize to the students, parents and citizens of our community about a portion of my comments during the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, August 25th, 2020.

I am sorry that I did not accurately acknowledge the impact of our current COVID-19 crisis on the mental health, mental illness and social/emotional wellbeing among our student population and families. It was never my intention to dismiss, marginalize, or minimize the important subjects and necessary recognition of mental health, mental illness and social/emotional wellbeing among our student population and families.

I regret that my remarks felt insensitive to some, and that my attitude may have appeared dismissive toward a very important subject matter. I should have had a stronger sensitivity for the struggles that many students face in the walk of everyday life.

My apology may not bridge the divide created from my comments, but please know that my heart aches for families and individuals who are in this situation. Though I do not presently face these challenges, my personal experience with my siblings who battled drug addictions, mental illness and attempted suicides, dates back many years ago, starting in the 1960’s and extending through the early 1990’s. This history causes even more regret that I may have not effectively championed the families currently dealing with mental illness on a day-to-day basis.

My comments should have included a deeper reflection of the importance of available resources for emotional & social wellbeing in our school district and our community.

I appreciate the individuals who have contacted me directly over the past few days. Thank you for the open and honest conversation that will have an impact on enhancing the understanding of the important role our school plays in the lives of all of our students across all learning levels.

It is my hope and desire to progress through the LSR7 phases toward full in-person learning as soon as possible. I want to see our students back in our amazing schools. I know that our schools are the first line of defense for so many challenges both students and parents face, and I appreciate the passion to ensure the safety for our children is a priority for all.

I will do everything possible to ensure the wishes of the parents and the wellbeing of the students are addressed as quickly and safely as possible. Our motto of “We prepare each student for success in life,” should be lived out every day, in every building, not just something on a wall.

Thank you,
Mike Allen; Member of the LSR7 Board of Education
