In March, ten students from the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Jr. Lee’s Summit West chapter attended the 49th National Convention. This four day event is offered to future engineers, technologists, and scientists. Students participated in professional and personal development, workshops, a career fair, a college fair and networking activities.

NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. Founded in 1975, NSBE supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering technology.

Lee’s Summit West senior, Haliyah Walker, founded the NSBE Jr. Lee’s Summit West chapter this year and it has grown to 26 students. The chapter has held after-school engineering, technology and computer science workshops at Summit Lakes Middle School. The students mentor middle school students in engineering and technology activities including engineering design challenges and programming self-driving robots.
