Mavericks hockey fans know that the franchise has a strong history with excellent goal tending and the 2018-19 season is no different. Thanks to a pair of injuries at the position and a recent call up the opportunity arose for Ben Halford to play regularly.
Benny as his new teammates call him is in his first full season as a hockey pro. Halford did spend the end of last season playing in Fayetteville in the SPHL. Benny is off to a strong start in his first four games he has started for the Mavericks. Halford started the season with the team but remained a backup until Nick Schneider was called up to the AHL.
Benny’s favorite pro sports team is the NFL’s New England Patriots. Since he hails from the area Halford states “It’s hard not to be a Pats fan.” Benny’s home town is Lenox, Mass. where his parents and a younger sister root him on from home.
Halford is happy to tell you his favorite hockey memory so far was earlier this season when he played in a kids day game down in Allen, Tx. Benny played in the game and the Mavericks won. Halford first put on a pair of skates at the age of four. Benny’s favorite website to visit is Instagram. If not in pro hockey today he would be doing something related to sports management. Halford believes this to be true as he majored in political science while at Princeton.
Benny’s favorite foods is steak and pork. Favorite sports movie for Halford is the little known “Southpaw” a boxing-themed picture. Following his playing days he wishes to be remembered as a goalie who brought a lot of wins to his team.
Check out Benny and his teammates when the Mavericks host rival Wichita Thunder on Saturday, Jan. 19. The fun begins inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena when the puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
